Release notes

This is what is new and changed in each version of kasivra. The latest version is at the top.

Version 0.23.1

New

  • Easier to find: the kasivra website is now easier to find in search engines and shows a nicer preview when you share a link.
  • Support kasivra: if you want to support the work on kasivra, you will find a link to our Ko-fi page in a box on the start page, in the help menu and at the bottom of the website.

Version 0.23.0

Changed

  • Simpler fields: give the field a name and choose a type. For the type Files you choose which folder the field takes files from, such as the folder of people or places. You can have as many fields as you like.
  • Choose files from a list: in the info panel you choose files from the folder in a dropdown list. The files are shown by their heading, with the file name in grey. The ones you choose are listed below, and you open a file by clicking its name.
  • Fields no longer create new files.

Version 0.22.0

New

  • Rename and delete tags: the menu next to a tag in the library renames or deletes it, in every file at once. If a tag gets the name of another tag, the two are merged.
  • Change tag colors: click the dot in front of the tag in the library.
  • Remove a tag from a file right in the file list when the tag is selected.
  • Ready-made fields: add People, Places, Story date or Status with one click in the info panel. With People you type who is in the chapter or scene, and a new name becomes a new file in the people folder.
  • Choose the folder for link fields: choose which folder the people (or places) are in, and the field takes the folder's name.

Changed

  • Fields explain better what they do and where what you fill in is saved.

Version 0.21.0

New

  • Kasivra in English: the whole app is now available in English too. Choose the language under Settings → Appearance → Language. System follows your browser's language, so the app is shown in English if your browser is not in Swedish. The language only applies to the app, not to the text in your files.

Version 0.20.2

New

  • Kasivra in English: the website, the help and these release notes are now in English too, at kasivra.com/en. Switch language with the link at the top of the page.

Version 0.20.1

New

  • Colors in code: code blocks are colored by their language, for example Python or JavaScript, in both the light and the dark theme. Write the language right after the three opening backticks.

Fixed

  • Tables are now shown as real tables in the formatted view. Click in the table to edit it.

Version 0.20.0

New

  • Command palette: press ⌘P (Ctrl+P on Windows) and type a few letters to jump to a file, folder, tag or another project, or to do something: create a file, switch layout, open the settings and more. With an empty search field, the most recently opened files are at the top. ⌘⇧P shows only the commands.
  • Search the text: type at least three letters, and the palette also finds files with the words in their text and shows an excerpt. Choose the file to jump straight to the spot.
  • Everything in the toolbar, such as bold, headings and lists, is in the palette too. So are Heading 4–6.
  • On Windows, keyboard shortcuts are shown with Ctrl instead of ⌘.

Version 0.19.1

Changed

  • The start page on kasivra.com has been rewritten and shows more clearly what kasivra can do: the features, the layouts and that your files are always yours.
  • The button at the top of the website is now called Start writing instead of Sign in, since no account is needed.

Version 0.19.0

New

  • New layout, Software Developer: for design documents, user guides and other technical writing. Code and code blocks stand out, tables line up in columns, and callouts and checklists are shown as boxes. The toolbar has buttons for code block, table, note, warning and checklist.
  • ⌘E turns the selected text into code.

Version 0.18.0

New

  • Fields of your own in the app: add fields such as people, place, date and status right from the info panel, and order or change them under Settings → Fields. You no longer need to edit any file by hand.

Version 0.17.0

New

  • Switch between projects: the folder button at the top of the library shows the most recently opened projects, so you switch with one click.
  • Recent projects on the start screen: the five most recent projects are ready when no project is open.
  • Error messages are now shown even when a project is open.

Version 0.16.2

New

  • Set the icon weight under Settings → Appearance.

Changed

  • The icons have slightly thinner strokes from the start.

Version 0.16.1

Changed

  • The folders in the library have a small ⋯ that is always visible and opens a menu with Rename and Pin as favorite. It takes less room than the old buttons.

Version 0.16.0

New

  • Favorite folders: pin a folder to the top of the library with the pin that shows when you hover over it. Favorites travel with the project folder.

Changed

  • Long folder names are cut off later in the library, since the buttons on the row no longer take up room.

Version 0.15.1

Fixed

  • The library and the file list can no longer be dragged so wide that the text disappears out of the window. A small part of the paper is always visible.

Version 0.15.0

New

  • Change the width of the library and the file list: drag the edge between the panels, so that long folder and file names fit. Double-click the edge to go back to the default width.

Version 0.14.1

Changed

  • The settings are divided into pages (Appearance, Editor, Extensions, Project and About kasivra), so it is easier to find your way.

Version 0.14.0

New

  • Stage play: a layout for plays, with acts and scenes as headings, character names in bold, speeches and italic stage directions. The toolbar has buttons for act, scene, character and parenthetical.
  • Game script: a layout for dialogue in games, with lines (NAME: text), choices with targets (- text -> node), conditions in braces and directions. The toolbar has buttons for all of these.

Version 0.13.0

New

  • Layouts for the text: under Settings → Editor you choose what the editor looks like. Novel is as before. Screenplay shows the text as a script page, with scene headings, character names and dialogue in their places, buttons for them in the toolbar and an estimate of the number of pages. The choice travels with the project folder.

Version 0.12.0

New

  • Extensions: under Settings → Extensions you choose which extra features the project has. The choice travels with the project folder.
  • Word goal: see how many words the file and the project have, and how far you have come towards your goal.
  • Focus mode: the paragraph you are writing stands out and the rest fades, and the line is kept in the middle of the page.
  • The toolbar is now an extension (Formatting) that is on from the start.

Version 0.11.1

Changed

  • Hover over an icon to see what the button does.

Version 0.11.0

New

  • Create files and folders in the app: New file at the top of the file list and New folder at the top of the library.
  • Rename files and folders with the pencil that shows when you hover over them, or with Rename in the info panel.

Version 0.10.1

Changed

  • The desks' illustrations are now in the bottom right corner and larger.
  • The info panel starts at the top, just like the library and the file list.

Version 0.10.0

New

  • Install kasivra as an app, on your computer or your phone. In Chrome and Edge, choose Install kasivra in the address bar; in Safari on iPhone and iPad, Share → Add to Home Screen. The app opens in a window of its own and starts without an internet connection too.
  • New logo: a k whose stem is a fountain pen.
  • Help: a new page that goes through how kasivra works, with all the keyboard shortcuts. You find it, and these release notes, under the question mark at the bottom of the library.
  • When kasivra has been updated, the app shows what is new since you were last here.

Changed

  • The window's title bar and the phone's status bar have the same color as the paper.

Version 0.9.0

New

  • Desk themes: choose what lies beneath the paper in Settings → Appearance → Desk. There are seven themes, from gray to cherry blossom, sea and starry night, each with its own dark variant.

Changed

  • The panels are brought out with the buttons in the corners of the paper.

Fixed

  • The settings can be reached even when the library is hidden, with the button at the top of the paper or with ⌘, (Ctrl+, on Windows).

Version 0.8.0

Changed

  • New look: the workspace is a sheet of paper lying on a desk. The library, the file list and the info panel lie beneath the paper, and the paper slides aside when you bring them out.
  • In the dark theme the paper is lighter than the desk, so that it still looks like it lies on top.

Version 0.7.0

New

  • Linked from in the info panel shows which files link to the open file, for example every scene Anna is in.

Version 0.6.0

New

  • Fields of your own in the info panel, such as people, place, date in the story and status. The fields are saved in the file, so they come along if you open it in Typora.
  • Link to other files from the info panel, such as people. A name that does not exist creates a new file.

Version 0.5.0

New

  • Info panel to the right of the text with information about the open file.
  • Add and remove tags in the info panel. Tags that already exist in the project are suggested as you type.

Version 0.4.0

New

  • Formatted text: headings, bold, italic, quotes, lists and links are shown as they look. The Markdown characters only show on the line with the cursor.
  • Switch to the Markdown source with ⌘/ (Ctrl+/ on Windows), the same shortcut as in Typora.
  • Toolbar with buttons for headings, bold, italic, lists, links and more.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: ⌘B for bold, ⌘I for italic and ⌘K for link.
  • The workspace looks the way you left it when you come back: the same file, the same folders and the same panels.

Version 0.3.0

New

  • Choose an icon for folders among 40 icons, next to the color.

Version 0.2.0

New

  • Settings at the bottom of the library: choose a light or dark theme and the text size of the manuscript.

Version 0.1.0

The first version.

New

  • Write in Markdown straight in an ordinary folder on your computer. Kasivra reads and saves the files where they are, so you can keep using Typora and git.
  • A library with folders and tags, a file list and the editor side by side.
  • The text is saved automatically as you write.
  • Give folders colors and arrange the project the way you want.
